What is JUDO ?
Unveiling the Art of Judo: A Gentle Way to Excellence
Judo, which translates to 'the gentle way' in Japanese, is a timeless martial art with roots dating back to 1882. This revered sport was introduced to the world by Professor Jigaro Kano at the Kodokan club in Japan. Over the years, Judo has grown in popularity, eventually earning its place on the Olympic stage in 1964. Its ascendancy was further propelled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, adopting Judo as their primary martial art.
In the world of competitive Judo, the objective is clear: to throw an opponent with precision, immobilize them through pins, or compel them to submit using joint locks or chokes. The governance of this sport spans the globe under the watchful eye of the International Judo Federation (IJF), whose members are organized into geographical regions. Each country, including ours, has its own governing body, with ours proudly known as the Irish Judo Association, of which our club is a dedicated member.
